Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory - Weddings and Events - Life Among the Butterflies

A Conservatory Love Story

A Conservatory Love Story

Spoiler - She said YES!

For Emily, it was just another Friday afternoon and just a normal visit to the Butterfly Conservatory. She and Dylan arrived with their sweet little girl just before closing and with the exception of one other person, they were all alone in the greenhouse. What a peaceful, relaxing way to cap off the work week! Little did she know, Dylan had called and arranged for exclusive after-hours use of the Conservatory, and the person casually strolling photographing butterflies was actually Catherine from Catherine Mombourquette Photography – there to capture the moment when Dylan asked Emily to marry him! Check out the adorable photos below – thank you so much to Catherine for the photos and to Emily and Dylan for sharing your special moment with us and agreeing to be featured on our blog.

We’re always honoured to be able to share such a unique place with our guests, and often for life’s most important moments. Butterflies are symbolic in so many ways so it’s not surprising that we see so many special events here at the Conservatory, but the novelty never wears off. We get just as excited as our guests do, and though we can’t promise that we won’t try to watch from behind a palm tree, we can guarantee that it’ll be a moment neither of you will forget.

Congratulations on your engagement Emily and Dylan – we hope the butterflies last a lifetime!

Brides- and Grooms-to-Be: Meet Rachel!

Wedding Coordinator If you’ve booked a wedding here at the Conservatory this year, chances are you already know that our Wedding Coordinator, Cayla, has welcomed a new bundle of joy into her family (it’s a GIRL!) and is now on maternity leave. We're so pleased to have our own Rachel Jefferson step in as the Interim Wedding and Event Coordinator.

Rachel isn’t a new face around here. She started with us in 2014 and has been Cayla’s right hand woman ever since, so it's natural (and lucky for us!) that she’s stepping in while Cayla is away snuggling with her new baby girl.

Rachel has a business degree with a major in Hospitality and Tourism from the University of Guelph and has almost 10 years’ experience working in the hospitality industry, and we're nothing short of confident that our wedding couples will love her (if they don't already!).

Now that she’s in the Coordinator’s chair, we felt it fitting to feature her on the blog which wouldn’t be complete without some Q & A’s:

What is your favourite part of the job?

I love meeting all of the couples and working with them to create the wedding they’ve always dreamed of. Every couple’s vision is different so I love hearing their ideas and bringing them to life.

What do you love about being part of the Cambridge Butterfly team?

The Conservatory is such a beautiful and unique place to work. We have a relatively small staff team here, so it’s like a little family. I love the culture here; everyone is so supportive of one another.

Any advice to the bride- or groom-to-be?

Always ask questions! Planning a wedding can be completely overwhelming. We offer full wedding consultation and coordination from the booking date right through to the wedding day – I’m just a phone call or an email away.

Do you have an all-time favourite wedding that was here at the Conservatory?

It is impossible to pick a favourite. I love seeing the creativity from each couple in how they transform our space. Each time is different, but just as magical.

Feel free to give Rachel a call or send her an e-mail. She can be reached at 519-653-1234 x112 or

Weddings at Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory - Venue FAQ's

Weddings at Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory - Venue FAQ's

IMG 9149

We caught up with Cayla VanHouwelingen, our Wedding and Events Coordinator to ask her some questions about hosting a wedding at our Conservatory, and what factors couples should take into consideration when choosing a venue for their special day.

What are some of the amenities provided by this particular venue?

We are a one-stop shop for weddings. We offer an indoor ceremony space (no rainy day plan B needed!), reception space, and photo location all in one place. The indoor tropical greenhouse and surrounding outdoor gardens and wildflower fields are beautiful backdrops for photos. We also have a Bridal Suite for the wedding party to use on the night of their event. Day-of coordination is also included in all of our packages!

Are couples able to plan both their ceremony and their reception together? How big is the property and what is maximum capacity?

The conservatory is a 25,000 square foot facility, situated on 110 acres. The tropical greenhouse is over 10,000 square feet. Couples are able to plan both their ceremony and reception on our property. Our capacity depends on the reception style. For a seated dinner reception (either buffet-style or four-course) we can seat up to 100 people comfortably. For a cocktail and hors d'ouvres-style reception, we can host a wedding of up to 200 guests.

When a couple is looking for a wedding venue what are some factors they should consider?

There are many factors to consider before choosing a venue. Cost is often a deciding factor and couples should look closely at what is included with their package price. One inclusion that is often overlooked is how much help they will get from the venue staff for set-up and tear down and if there is a coordinator included, or if they will have to do most of the work themselves. Coming from personal experience, having a coordinator and a venue that takes care of everything from start to finish is worth it – wedding couples will not want the hassle and responsibility of cleaning up the night of their wedding!

Another thing to consider is the timing and ease of the day. Because we offer everything all in one location, wedding couples benefit from having to travel between the ceremony, reception, and photo sites. Guests really enjoy this aspect as well, especially if they are from out of town and unfamiliar with the area. While photos are being taken, guests can enjoy cocktail hour in our lobby and galleries. It makes for an efficient and relaxing environment for everyone involved.

Finally, do you have any suggestions for couples looking to plan the perfect wedding?

I always suggest that wedding couples go with the venue, décor, food, and theme for the wedding that they want. Take opinions and suggestions from outside sources (parents, friends, vendors), but in the end make sure the wedding is a reflection of the two of them. If getting married surrounded by butterflies has been a dream of theirs, or they’ve always wanted to do a funny choreographed first dance, then do it!

How can interested couples get in touch to book the space?

Interested couples can get in contact with me via e-mail, at or calling in for a chat at 519-653-1234 x. 112
