Homeschool Program 2017/2018

Program times: One Wednesday & Thursday every month (September through April) 1:00pm to 3:00pm.

Cost: $8.50 per participating child, $5.00 per adult, plus HST.
Participating children must be accompanied by an adult.

Unique programming for all ages!

  • Our programs are designed for families with children ages 3-12, however all ages are welcome to attend, including younger siblings under 3. All participating children are asked to pay program admission.
  • Each month will be a different theme.
  • Children will experience learning in our classrooms, our tropical conservatory, and our insect galleries - and maybe even a trip outside!

Thursday, September 7 – 1:00 – 3:00 pm – Insects of Ancient Egypt FULL

Bees, beetles, butterflies and more! Learn why insects featured prominently in ancient Egyptian culture. Last chance to see the special display of live ‘Butterflies from Egypt & East Africa’ and explore the travelling exhibit ‘Egypt – Gift of the Nile’ on loan from the ROM.

Wednesday, September 20 & Thursday, September 21 – 1:00 – 3:00 pm - Monarch Migration

Join us for a fun and interactive afternoon exploring the unique life cycle, predators and threats to the monarch butterfly. Discover how this incredible insect that weighs less than a dime can migrate over 4000 km to Mexico and how it’s great-great grandchildren return to Canada the following summer. Learn about tagging and how you can help bring back the monarch! Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing as we hope to be both outside and inside. Wednesday, October 11 & Thursday, October 12 – 1:00 – 3:00 pm – Creepy Crawly Critters

Come and play our Creepy Crawly Critter game that will challenge your senses as we discover more about different senses that insects use. Touch and hold some of our favourite creepy crawly critters as well! Pick the date works best for your family.

Wednesday, November 22 & Thursday, November 23 – 1:00 – 3:00 pm – Marvelous Mouthparts

Insect mouthparts are adapted to the type of food they eat. Some insects even have different mouthparts at different stages in their life! Learn who has a mouth like a sponge, scissors, and party blower and how it helps them find what they need. Pick the date works best for your family.

Wednesday, December 13 & Thursday, December 14 – 1:00 – 3:00 pm – Crafting

Join us for a relaxing afternoon of nature inspired crafts , a Conservatory scavenger hunt and encounters with live tropical insects! Pick the date works best for your family.

Wednesday, January 17 & Thursday, January 18 – 1:00 – 3:00 pm – Bugsicle Hunt

Come and discover how different creepy crawlies survive our cold Canadian winter, from migration to hibernation, and everything in between. We’ll start inside and then bundle up for a hike outside to look for signs of insect life. Afterwards, warm up with a visit to the tropical Conservatory! Pick the date works best for your family.
