The Doris, Heliconius doris

Doris

The Doris occurs in different colour forms. The forewings are black with two white patches. The hindwings are black and, depending on the form, blue, red, or green. Their wingspan measures 7 – 9 cm.

The Doris is distributed from Central America to the Amazon. Adults have a rapid flight and can be found in forest clearings. Females gather in groups to lay eggs in the leaves of the host plant. The caterpillars are yellow with black bands, and they feed on passion vine (Passifloraceae).
