March 2015

Bugs as Sweet as Honey

Come taste some edible insects served up sweet & tasty!

This year for March break we celebrate entomophagy (the practice of eating insects) by combining it with another great food that is produced by insects: honey!

Each of our 3 recipes will feature the delectable golden liquid that honeybees produce, in the form of fudge, a protein bar, and a savoury seasoning of honey-mustard. But don't forget the bugs themselves!

The recipes all include some insect protein, either in the form of crickets or mealworms. While the protein bar is made with cricket flour (you can't even see the bugs!), we'll also be serving up straight dry-roasted crickets combined with honey-mustard seasoning. Or you can sample the honey fudge topped with dried mealworms. Are you brave enough to eat a bug?

The thought of eating insects seems strange to the average North American, most of the world's population eats bugs everyday. Insects provide a healthy, nutritional source of protein; for many cultures, insects are the staple in their diet.

You may be surprised to know that the idea of feasting on bugs is catching on in the West though. More and more people are discovering the benefits of adding insect protein to their diet, and more business are beginning to enter the market to supply the demand. Right here in Ontario, Next Millennium Farms is Canada's first insect-farm for human consumption which opened up just within the last couple years, and is a proud sponsor of our BugFeast event.

You'll find some great recipe ideas on their website. Plus, check out our Pinterest album about entomophagy to learn more and discover the exciting world of eating insects. And if you're new to the whole concept, come visit us during March break BugFeast to check it out for yourself!
