Celebrating 15 Years!

It all began as a small butterfly exhibit in a hoop house on the property of what was known as "Monarch Manor." After quickly outgrowing its size, plans were started to build a 25,000-sq foot facility that would offer a family-friendly, educational space for guests & students to learn more about the wonderful world of insects!

Our current building was opened in January of 2001 and since then we've been proud to be a place for discovery, education, events, even weddings.

To date, more than 150,000 school children have come for our education programs to learn about butterflies. An average of 10,000 people come back every year during March Break for our popular BugFeast event which has become a tradition for many. For 15 years, we've been proud & grateful to be part of the community!

Here's some fun trivia about us:
  • Over the past 15 years, we've housed approximately 576,000 butterflies & moths (averaging about 38,400 a year)!
  • Many of our 15 species of birds & our Red-eared Slider turtles have been donated to us over the years. Some of the birds, like the Village Weaver and White Dove are 10 years old, and the turtles are about 20 years old!
  • Our live insect collection has grown over the years to include such exotic creatures as Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, Giant African Land Snails, Malaysian Jungle Nymph stick bugs, Giant Millipedes, and Tailed Whip Scorpions. Currently our live insect collection is as big as ever!
  • The Butterfly & Moth Gallery showcases more than 800 various species from around the world, and the Insect Gallery displays over 840 representative insects.

Thanks to our visitors and members, we're still going strong and look forward to being part of our community for another 15 years to come!
